Flames Arise
" At 10:23 A.M, fire departement headquaters received an electronically transmitted trouble alarm from the basement of the Hurst building." -- The Great Baltimore Fire by Peter B. Perterson
The Great Baltimore Fire began as a blaze on early February 7th, 1904. Fire alarms in the John E. Hurst Company basement and witnesses signaled local firemen to the scene. Flames traveled through the building and the fire spread to local buildings, such as the Carr, Owens, and Heineman Company buildings. The fire spread even further and attracted local fire companies.
